Suva City Map Fiji Islands
Suva City occupies a promontory on the southern coastline of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu, and has a slight central ridge. Viti Levu means 'big Fiji' in the Fijian language. Suva's CBD lies along the western facing side of the promontory providing wonderful views across Suva Harbour to the west. The main Queen's Highway exits the City to the west also, to Lami and then on to Pacific Harbour (about 45 minutes away) and beyond to the Coral Coast holiday region and Nadi. The Suva region is not blessed with beaches, but the promontory has a distinctive sea wall and esplanade around most of the promontory to the west and south. Suva Point has a small park that is popular with local residents as a picnic spot.
A coastal road follows the promontory all the way round to the eastern side of Suva with a jogging track on the ocean esplanade that has been created by the Suva City Council. This is used by many Suva residents as well as by visitors. The Suva Airport is found not right at the city itself but at the town of Nausori about a 30 minute road journey to the east. To the north of Suva and extending to the west are picturesque highlands. From Suva City a landmark feature along the highlands to the west is Joske's Thumb, so called because it is a prominent thumb-shaped volcanic plug and very distinctive on the skyline. An interesting feature about Joske's Thumb is that the famed mountaineer, the late Sir Edmund Hillary, actually climbed the peak in the later years of his life. He had attempted to climb it earlier in his life (prior to climbing Mt Everest) but at that time he had been unsuccessful. However, he did eventually manage to climb and descend Fiji's well-known peak! |
